From our earliest childhood experiences and as we move through adulthood, finding our place among others – that secure supported acceptance known as a sense of belonging – is imperative to our well-being. In fact, research has established that a sense of belonging is as important a need as food or shelter and a core component to academic and job success.
Yet, all too often many people feel like they don’t belong, whether that message is overtly or subtly conveyed. This is especially true if we are perceived as different because of physical or mental disabilities. A single incident of being excluded can create feelings of doubt. We feel less valued and heard. The negative impact of long-term exclusion can undermine motivation, mental state, physical health, and commitment.
We All Belong uses storytelling to make a difference by educating people how to build a sense of belonging for others and find it for yourself in school, in your personal life, and in your work. I will utilize the experience of Stanford University psychology and psychiatry experts including but not limited to Carol Dweck, Greg Walton, and the Stanford Belonging Project to support empirical findings in the book. I will also include practical advice for making change. The format of We All Belong will involve educational research, personal narratives, and recommendations for belonging and would be useful to laypeople, businesses, students, and teachers.
